Fashion inspiration from Asake’s terminator and other trending Nigerian music videos

Everyone loves a good music video. From the interesting locations to crafted stories and mind-blowing visuals, oh, and the music, what’s there not to love?

In this post, we bring to you something you might not be paying attention to when watching these videos; fashion.

From the artistic eyes of stylists and artistes themselves, the outfits and accessories used in any music video complement the video and align with the overall vibe.

So we’re putting the spotlight on these looks, not only for information or entertainment but for you to pick a few tips and tricks for your next outfit.

Here are fashion inspirations for your next outfit, all from trending music videos from our favorite Nigerian artistes.

5 Fashion inspiration from trending Nigerian music videos

1. Blazers/suits

Asake wore a Mint green Blazer in his terminator music video

The world of fashion, particularly this year, just cannot get enough of blazers/suits. From oversized blazers to well-fitted ones, in a variety of fabrics and colors, we’re all here for it.

We find a striking gold blazer set worn by Adekunle Gold in his new music video for his song, 5 stars. He pairs this with gold necklaces as well as a white pearl and green clover necklace.

We also see that Asake has taken a liking to blazers as he sports one cream blazer in the video of Bandana, a song with Fireboy, and a mint green oversized blazer set in his own music video, Terminator

2. Vests

A good vest is a subtle or sometimes, not so subtle, fashion item that just elevates a look and gives room for creativity. This fashion item is definitely here to stay as it’s easy to style.

Take Pheelz’s geometric vest in his new music video with Davido called Electricity. He pairs it with a plain white t-shirt underneath and a simple pair of jeans. For accessories, he adds black wrap-around shades with silver necklaces.

Another simple way to style a vest is as seen in Chris brown’s music video with Wizkid for the song, Call me every day. Wizkid sports a beige blue, and black Dior vest with black oversized pants and leopard-print faux-fur slippers.

3. Short-sleeved shirts

We’re talking about breezy, simple short-sleeved shirts that have become a staple in many closets. They’re not only simple to style but are an easy fix during the hot weather. They also give room for layering during the cold weather or whenever you want to play sound with styling.

We see a short-sleeved shirt in Mayorkun’s music video for Certified loner where he wears a white lace shirt with a simple white vest and black pants. He pairs that with a pair of black dress shoes and white socks. He wears another short-sleeved brown shirt with a white t-shirt.

Fireboy’s plain orange shirt in his music video for his song, Bandana, is also a good example of this.

4. Traditional kaftans

Another style inspiration you can take today is a traditional and simple kaftan spotted in Asake’s Terminator video where he pairs it with traditional beads and in MI Abaga's video for his song, The Guy, where his backup models were in all-white kaftans layered with white capes.

This particular fashion piece doesn’t take much to pull off and for that, we’re grateful.

5. Black monochrome look

Black is not an uncommon color for music videos but in this post, we highlight ways to style a black monochromatic look.

Although a large part of Fireboy’s Bandana video had almost everyone in black, one striking way is the opening look he was in. A sheer black sleeveless shirt with tailored black pants and a red bandana.

We also see in Zlatan’s new video, That Guy, where he wears a black hoodie with black oversized pants. He adds a brown jacket to top it off, easy.

All the videos mentioned - Terminator by Asake, Call me every day by Chris Brown and Wizkid, That Guy by Zlatan, Electricity by Pheelz and Davido, Certified Loner (No competition) by Mayorkun, The Guy by M.I Abaga, Bandana by Fireboy DML and Asake , 5 star by Adekunle Gold
